WELLINGTON NOTES.

By Onlookhb.

The meeting at the Hutt last week was the most successful the Racing Club has yet held. The totalisator returns were an increase of £800 on last Autumn meeting, and a record for the club. The judge's (Mr G. H. Scales) do cisions came in foi some adverse criticism, especially in the Welter Hack in which Ruby Twist's number was hoisted above Sirocco's. The latter is a four-year-old half brother (by St. Clair) to Euroclydon, and should -be heard of next season.

Mr W. H. Wanklyn was in town on Wednesday last, but did not journey out tc the Hutt.

The St. Andrews are turning out all right. Ifleka, a two-year-old gelding owned by Mr A Rathbone accounting for the- Maiden Hac 1 , Race. He is a half brother to Blarney, Zanella. and Palaver.

C. Jenkins, who was married last week, rode Boreas in the Railway Handicap, when he won in brilliant style. Six furlongs, with 10.5 up, in lmin 15sec takes some beating. On the second day, with a furlong farther to go, Boreas had 41b more to carry, but failed to f.et a place. Derrett rode Boreas, Jenkins being upon Sylvia Park, who ran second.

The Hon. Jaincs Carroll was among the interested spectators at the Hutt. The grey Tauhei, who carries the- Huia colours, raa through the meeting unsuccessfully. ,

The Woodville Jockey, Club will Lave a auau

cessful meeting this week. Mi J. E. Henry and Mr H. Piper have gone through to assist. One of the best-known visitors figuring at the Hutt was Mr "Patsy" Butler.

The most popular victory at the meeting was that of Captain Russell's Tigress and Percy iWhite, and on returning to scal£ they were cheered again and again in a hearty manner. The decision of the Appeal Court in the Tangahoe case means that George Laing must xemain idle for 12 months. I believe this is his first serious offence, if such it can be called. Laing, who has been well known as a «der and trainer since he was mentor to Hippodamia, Rubina, and others, was unfortunate that he did not offend on the West Coast of the Somh Island or Nelson, where a fine or a day's disqualification would have done. C. Stratford has a useful "horse in Paladin. His gallop in the Waiwetu Handicap (one mile), "with 101b more on his back, in about the same time as the Thompson, showed that he should Lave been well up in the latter. Paladin's &a.m Nellie (by Albany — Seadrift) was a successful performer in Canterbury, but on the BmaTl side. Frank Cochrane had a couple of easy rides ton Whangaroa. Mr Evett made the second hurdles a gift to him. Derrett had to shake Altair up to keep out of DjinJDjin's way. The extra two furlongs appeared to suit Cutts's colt. Handicapper Evett looks better on it than lie has done for some time. Ngaparu, a three-year-old filly by St. Andrew—Misdeal, trained by T. Clark at the Hutt, showed a lot of pace in the Farewell, and, with Boreas away, she would have won the •Hailway Handicap on the first day. Mr W. L. Clifford, steward of the Marlborough ■Racing Club and brother to Sir George, was among the visitors at the Hutt, also Mr Jem O'Leary, clerk of the scales at Riverlands.
