HYDE.

jj; ay i. — A. social to bid farewell to Mr Buruard (late head teacher) prior to his departure from Hyde was held in the school on Friday, 21st ult. There was a large attendance, every scat being occupied. Mr Boyd, chairman of the school committee, presided, and said he was sure he voiced the sentiments of those present when he expressed regret at Mr Burnard's departure. He also eulogised the good work done by Mr Burnard, and said we could not allow him to depart without some token of esteem, and he therefore had much pleasure in handing Mr Burnard a purse of sovereigns. Mr Boyd then vacated the chair, as other functions were to take place. Rev. Mr Jamieson was thereupon asked to take the chair, and intimated that Mr J. M'Lean had been deputed by the members of Mr Burnard' s Bible Class and the Good Templars to make a presentation on their behalf. Mr M'Lean briefly addressed Mr Burnard regarding his labours in the Bible class and the cause of temperance, and handed him a beautiful set of gold studs and sleeve links. Mr Burnard expressed his gratitude for what had been said and done that night, and thanked all those who had assisted him with his work in Hyde. Tea and cake were liberally dispensed by the ladies, and several songs and recitations were rendered during the evening. Mr and Mrs Burnard and family left for their new home on the 26th ult., and a large number of their friends assembled on the Hyde station to see them off. The following testimonial was given to Mr Burnard by the school committee: — "It is with feelings of deep regret that we learn of your departure from Hyde owing to your appointment to another school. During the timo you have been in Hyde you have performed your duties, in a careful, painstaking, and zealous manner, and the children have made good progress under your capable tuition. We have therefore great . pleasure in testifying to your efficiency as a teacher. Not only has your influence been felt in your professional capacity, but you have also as isted zealously in every movement having for its object the welfare of the community, and have at all times been ready to extend a helping hand to those who required it. We shall always be highly gratified to hear of your success, and trust that the future has in store for you every happiness and prosperity. The accompanying purse of sovereigns is a tangible proof of the esteem in which you are held by the community." — Occasional correspondent.

If mis 166 a and 166 c. TO THE KDITOK. Sir, — I noticed that a settler who forfeited his section waited on tho school commissioners to show reasons why Runs 166 a and 166 c should be subdivided into smaller runs. I hope tho Otago School Commissioners will not be quite so foolish as to make the attempt, in the meantime at all events. They made this attempt befoic, and it proved a failure and caused them immense trouble. I have not the least doubt but that the same result will occur again, unless they securo real bona- fide settlers. — I am, etc.,
