GOLF.

The Dunedin Golf Club brought to a close their Championship mooting on Saturday. Tha rounds were particularly close and interesting, and the semi-finals found Mr Andrew Todd matched with Air E. S. Paterson, and Mr W. C. Macf4regor with Mr S. Mathp.son (Mr Patersou being the holder of tho championship in 1898 and Mr MacGrocor that for 1£97). Mr Paterson won his round after an interesting game with 4 up and 2 to go. In the other half Mr Mathefcon managed to boat his opponent by 2 up on the last hole (the Hawthorns), getting it in 3. This was somewhat of a surprise, as Mr MacGregor takes a lot of beating, and Mr Matheson is a comparatively young player. In the final an interesting match was expected, and thp following are a few details of the play, which commenced at the Terraces : — No. 1 hole was won by Matheson, as Paterson was unfortunate in finding his drive in a cow slide, which co^t him 2 strokes — Matlieson, 1 up. Lislon'.s : P.oth dro\c well and had good approaches, but Paterson secured bole by a long putt — <-quare. The CamelVs Back hole was aho won by Potorson in s—l5 — 1 up. Plateau was tecured by Matheson, who was on the green, in 2 fine shots, and holed out in 2 more, thus squaring matters again. Sherriff's (the next hole) was halved in 4, Matheson getting over the hill in his drive. For the next hole (Hawthorns) both good drives, but bad lies, Paterson haying to play hack; nowever, he holed out in 5, and secured the hole — 1 up. At the Creek Paterson got on the green in 2, while Matheeon took 1 more, which cost him the hole — Paterson 2 up. The next two holes being very much overgrown with gorse and broQm made the winning of them largely a matter of luck as to Hop. Mathcson was most fortunate in this respect, secured both, and squaring the game half-way. Up to this point both played about equal, but in the second half Matheson played the better game. Flagstaff was won in 5 by Matheson, both being on green in 3—l3 — 1 up. Still both had good drives, but Paterson missed, a short putt to half —

Matheson 2 up. Anderston was also won by Matheson in good style, carrying the long hazard in his second, while Paterson got into trouble among the rushes — Matheson 3 up. Football was secured by Paterson in 4, but in the next he missed bis putt for a half. Matheson was again 3 im with 4 to go. At the Koromikos both the shots were short, but while Matheson's was clear, Paterson found his in the scrub, from which he failed to extract in Jjis third. This gave Matheson the round — 4 "up and 3 to go and the championship of his club for 1899.
