WOMEN'S FRANCHISE LEAGUE.

I At a meeting of the executive of the Women's Franchise League, held at the residence of the president, Mrs Hatton, the following resolutions were unanimously carried: — " 1. That as indirect taxation presses most heavily upon those least able to bear it, this executive consider that in any alteration of the tariff special attention should be given to the reduction of duties upon the necessaries of life. " 2. That the executive consider the present system of treating habitual drunkards is contrary to the principles of justice and common" sense ; that instead of sending them to gaol they should be confined in inebriate homes, the support of which should be equitably adjusted between those who produce them and the relatives to whom they belong.

"3. That no house for the sale of intoidcaNing drinks should be allowed to exist within 10 miles of any State farm." The above resolutions have been foiwarded to the Premiei, together with strongly emphasised expressions of obinion that, as soon as the old-age pension scheme shall be properly established, an amending bill should he brought in by the Government making women eligible for the pension five years earlier than men.

The Rev. Mr Dickie has accepted the call as minister of the Brupner Presbyterian Church. For the Charlotte Yonge Scholarship for Girls at the Winchester High School, sums amounting to over £1200 have been received, which, we are informed Vv the hon. secretary (Esme Stuart), include donations from all parts of England and Wales, as well as from Ireland, America, Australia, and the Falkland Isles. The Sunday schools in Toronto also are now collecting money for this object. The total sum required is £6000.
