The Balloon for Arctic Exploration. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — I often wonder that our scientific men do not bring tho balloon more into use for „ arctic £?id antarctic exploration. I do not mean ffiem to start from England or France, but to ship as close to the Pole as the ice would permit ; wait for a favourable wind, when, it would only be a matter of a few hours to get there. The greatest risk would bo the return journey, which would also depend upon tho wind, but if men were to spread from the vessel and form temporary depots there would bo greater chance of the balloonists finding the ship. I would like to give my views upon tho construction of a balloon for this purpose, but liopo an abler pen than mine will take the matter up. — I am, etc.,
