CAULFIELD EASTER MEETING.
Rather mixed weather was associated with Ihe Caulfield Easter meeting, sunshine and tain alternating. The Sportsman reports : To begin with, a short price was accepted about Detonator for the Bambra Trial Stakes, but the Malvolio colt was too sore 'to act properly, and first notice went to the big Abercorn gelding, Barleycorn, who started at a remunerative price, and won with a good deal in hand. Bell Metal followed up Ihis previous successes on the same course fey .comfortably winning the Hurdle Race "from Clamorous. The latter was well backed Jby the Ballarat division, and he made a good show. Sedge, whd evidently had improved vastly in a week, seeing that he finished at the tail end of a mile race at Sandown on the previous Saturday, created something of A surprise -bx cleverly winning the Easter
Handicap from a- fair field. Kulwyne, who was the choice of backers, faded out in the straight after making the running, and it is now evident that the Deerswood filly is no staying wonder. After being right up with 'the leaders most of the time, Eumeralla went on in front and landed the Steeplechase. . Butler, a 6 to, 4- favourite, looked to have the race at his mercy at the last fence, but he struck heavily, and this destroyed his chance. Compulsion fell at the same obstacle, and breaking a leg he had to be destroyed. Earlier in the race The Beaver also - turned over awkwardly. Curtin, his rider, had the muscles of one of his shoulders badly sprained, and the gelding himself was a good deal knocked about. Before he left Australia Carnage sired a few rather stylish colts, but co far they have not won much money. Two of his get were seen at Caulfield. One of them, Atbara, from Lady Disdain, was thought equal to silencing the by no means formidable-looking opposition in the Two-Tear-Old Handicap. He had 'something to gay in the finish, but he failed to reach the Malua. filly Isola, who certainly did not win out of her turn. Atbara is a taking youngster^, and he must have been pretty well tried for his engagement. He will probably do better in public with the benefit of experience, for he looks like being benefited by racing. The other Carnage in the field was Battle Royal, who is from Princess Alice, the dam of Alix. A very neat colt is Battle Royal, and he shows pace enough to suggest that he will turn ont useful property.
