ALLEGED ILL-TREATMENT. A carrier named Frederick Stevens, r*« siding at Rangiora, was found in his stables on the sth dead, with a gunshot in the left? breast. Apparently he had*committed the act himself. GHRISTCHURCH, April 7. At the inquest on the death of Frederick Stevens at Rangiora to-day, the jury returned a verdict — "That deceased died from a gunshot wound self-inflicted whilst h© was suffering from mental depression and severe pain arising from ill-treatment received during the evening of death." A rider was added that the body should be medically examined to ascertain the extent of the injuries with a view to the prosecution of the person or persons who inflicted them. This refers to the evidence given during the inquest to the effect thai deceased had been fighting, and probably committed suicide because of the knocking about he received. A post mortem examination was m? •! during the afternoon, but failed to revifcl extensive injury other than that caused £^? the gunshot wound.
