ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION.
"RETURN OF THE BELGICA. NEW YORK, April 5. The steamer Belgica, which conveyed Lieutenant De Gerlache's expedition to the Antarctic, has arrived at Punta Arenas, Magellan Straits. The vessel was Leebound for two months in March. ¥**w land was discovered in the Weddcll Sea, open water being seen reaching far south. A number of active volcanoes were also discovered. The vessel will not return for another winter. [The Belgica expedition, undei Lieutenant De Gerlache, sailed late in I&J7. It had been reported that the vessel was wrecked, but she put in an appearance last yeer in the Magel- • lan Straits, and after talcing in a stock of coal, stores, &c, sailed again for the Antarctic] April 6. The Belgica visited Hughes Bay, Palmer's Land, penetrating the ice to the region, westward of Alexander Land, and reaching latitude 71.36, longitude 90. The vessel cleared the ice on March 14. April 9. Lieut. Gerlache remains at Punta Arenas,for three months, tor the purpose oi refitting the Belgica. Lieut. Darco and one sailor died during the late expedition.
