Bound for the Rear.

There are, undoubtedly, people who feel no fear when they are under fire in battle, but their fearlessness is no mark of real bravery. The man whe owns himself scared may be braver. A soldier who confessed to his trepidation when first under fire told this story to a war correspondent: " When our regiment war acting with th« reserves," he said, " I saw a newspaper feller 'legging ' it back from the front. He was running for all there was in him, and looked as if he had a through ticket for the rear. We found the reserve line just as dangerous as the firing line, and the bullets were so thick that they were very uncomfortable. " The newspapei man saw me looking at him, and he paused long enough to say: " ' This war correspondent's life isn t what it's cracked to be.' "Then he started on. I looked after him, and a bullet whizzed past my ear, and 1 called out to him : '• ' Old man, if I wasn't an enlisted man, I'd — I'd run — you— ra race ! ' "
