The Birmingham Weekly Mercury tells an amusing story of how a certain committee was recently called upon to consider whether "A" was or was not strong enough for admission to its cup tourney. "B" and "C" thought not, and they pleaded that " A's " exclusion would leave the contestants 1"! in number, thus securing a comfortable and reposeful bye for each of the players in turn. But "D " and "E " were of a different way of thinking. Their allegation was that a bye gained by the exclusion of "A " would not be much of a rest. "It would be easier," said they, "to beat 'A' than to walk about and do nothing." So "A" was admitted. Then what happened? ■" hl " beat both "D " and " E." Such are the uncertainties of chess life. Wherefore " let him that thinketh he hath an easy win take heed lest he loseth."
