Hago Witness Sixth Solution Tourney.
In last issue the publication of the problems contributed to the sixth tourney commenced. A solution tourney is held in connection therewith, and will be carried on up to the 30th of June next. In this the scores of solvers other than the prize winners in the fifth tourney will be brought forwaid oji the continuous principle, and a prize of 10s 6d will be given to the solver who, on this principle, obtains the highest number of points. A prize of 10s 6d is also offered by Mr S. S. Blackburne, of Chriatchurch, to be competed for in the ordinary way—that is to say, not on the continuous plan. The problems competing in the tourney, together with selected problems, will be submitted for solution. The conditions of the competition are:—Points: Each author's solution and every " cook," two-movers 1, three-movers 2; satisfactory criticism of each problem that has a solution and is not cooked, 1. A correct statement that a problem has no solution counts as a solution. As a. part of his criticism, a solver should give marks, from 0 to 10, according to his estimate of the merits of a problem. Solutions and criticisms must be completed within one week from the time x'roblems are received by the solver, and should be posted or delivered at the first opportunity after they arc ready. Criticisms that are not sufficiently brief and to the point will be subject to abridgment. Please condense. It has been arranged that the problems shall be published in the Canterbury Times simultaneously with thoir publication in the Otago Witness. The readers of the Canterbury Times may send their solutions and criticisms to the chesß editor of that paper.
