HAWKESBURY RACING,

' The leading events at this New South Wolf fixture arc thus commented on by •" f ' ■> More " : For the Nursery Handicap y> a... -a, a smart-looKing filly by Sunrise fion. JJur. Rose, was selected as -the best of the buuoh, the demand £or her being so great that she soon hardened in the market quotations to a shade of odds on. Though the company was small, it afforded a couple of instances of want of resource in equine nomenclature, that senseless practice of spelling backwards the name of the sire and dam having been resorted to in the cases of Rotadam and Elleh respectively. Elleh cut out the work for half the journey, when she retired, and Parker bringing the favourite through as they rounded the bend, landed her au easy winner. The scratching pen made sad havoc among the candidates for the Autumn Handicap, only 14- of the 30 numbered on the list remaining in. "When speculation opened April Fool had the call in the market, but the weight of money in favour of Carberra soon sent the daughter of Carbine to the head of the quotations, where she remained to the rice of the barrier. At half a point longer odds Mr Foy'B horse was always marketable, the Junee mare Trienid was next in request, and beyond Fairy Prince and Water Colour extended prices were obtainable. Callinan, who had the inbuilt on April Fool, took him to the front soon after the rif>e of the barrier, and letting him run along at his own pace, Icept him in the lead, his nearest attendants being Bellwood, Trienid, Fairy Prince, Water Colour, and Carberra. Bellwood retired as they came round the bend, where his place was taken by Fairy Prince, while Carberra, Trienid, and Water Colour were just in" the wake of the leading pair. Fairy Prince made a determined effort to catch April Fool at the distance, but the game son of Crowberry responded generously to every call from Callinan, and Ecored a popular win by a neck, while the other place was occupied by Water Colour, who ran a good mare. The favourite showed dangerously on the extreme left at the home turn, but with Trienid, was beaten out of a place. On returning to scale Ihe winner waß greeted with a hearty round of applause, which could not have been otherwise than gratifying to his owner, who was present to witness the victory. April Fool was got in England, j)y Crowberry from Atropos, and Jlr Foy, having purchased his darn, tent her out to Australia, where the colt was foaled to English time on April 1, hence the appropriateness of the name. His dam, Atropos, is by the Irish horse Arbitrator from Happy Hampton, by Hampton from Cantiniere, by Stockwell from Cantine, by Orlando.
