BEAUMONT.
- This year's meeting — the ninth annual meeting promoted by the Beaumont Clvb — is de-^ Bcrrbed by tho Tuapcka Times as the most '■successful the club bas yet held. The day [was beautifully fine, and as a result a very i large number of viators from Lawrence, Rox- ! Iburgh, Tapanui. and surrounding districts jwere present, the very respectable sum of. £25 being taken at the gate. The course was in good order, and the going pretty fair, although no fast times were recorded. The f fields were fairly large, but only in the (Maiden Plato and the Handicap Hack Race {..were the finishes close. A good deal of dis- • satisfaction was expressed at the absence of j saddle cloths for the horses, but it was not i the club's fault, as they failed to arrive in : time. Another cause for complaint was the \ change of colours by some of the riders, this 1 causing some 'confusion to onlookers, and ; making it impossible for them to pick the horses. In the Maiden Plate, although tho '«tart was not as good as could have bean wished. Sir Robert had a somewhat easy win, tlie favourite running into second place. There .jwere six scratchings in the Maiden Trot, General Kitchener having things all his own way. Quickshot, who was looked on as a certainty, won the double in^a very hollow manner, there being nothing to trouble her in" either event. In the Dunkejd Trot Stormont. who trotted in fine style, paid his backers the good sum of £10 13s, and later on in the Farewell Trot again paid the handsome dividend of £23 2s. For the Novel Race a field of four faced the starter, Blizzard's win being very -popular. In the Hack Race the only protest of the meeting occurred. Claremont was leading, and Blizzard came with a good run, and both the horsea passed the judge's "box together. The judge gave his decision as a dead Tieat, and wae .thereupon subjected to some uncomplimentary remarks. One person, who made some remark to the judge, was ."brought before the stewards and ordered to {■ninke a public apology. The owner of Blizzard protested against Claremont being placed 'with his horse on the ground that he was with coming \ip the straight by ' Claremont's rider. After the evidence of i both parlies had -been heard, the protest wa3 dismissed, and the totalisator paid out on both horse-.
