UPPER TAIERI.

April 10. — During the past week a large number of sportsmen visited the district in quest of game, and probably a little recreation as well. ! The weather was all that could be desired by j our sporting friends from several centres of Otago. I am glad to report that a number of ; good tags of game were secured and taken down to Outram by several residents in that locality. During the first few days at the open- j ing a rapid discharge of the breech-loader was ! heard from all parts of the plain. Heavy fir- : ing was also kept up at Lake Onslow for several ! days in succession. Rabbit Poisoning. — Pollard poisoning is be- ' ing vigorously prosecuted by several bands of j men engaged for the work by a number of the j large flockowners in the south-western divi- i sion of this extensive district. Rocklande, j Puketoi, and one or two othei stations are busily engaged at present with the laying down < of poisoned pollard over hill and dale in the I back country, with a view to having the rabbit I pest (?) reduced to a minimum prioi to I^ie advent of winter. The inspectors have ben on the warpath, and, I may add, have issued instructions to several of the lessees of the runs , to put on men, which in many instances has been complied with. MINING. It has transpired that Messrs Parker and Co.have sold their mining claim, situated -at 'the base of the Taieri Gorge, Jogether with water rights, etc., for a good sum of money to a resident miner at Miller's Flat. Adjoining this claim I have to report that another large claim has been 'marked out. Messrs Rankin and party, I note, have taken I up an extended mining claim situated at Bond's Creek, a locality famed of old for its rich patches of gold. With reference to the Taieri Falls, I may remark that quitt a rush for a supply of water by several enterprising mining companies has taken place.
