THE GOLD RETURNS.

BOOM v. STEADY WORK. {From Otra Own Correspotdknt.) AUCKLAND, April 6. The Star says m reference to the Colonial gold output : — "To Aucklanders it is natural that the prosperity of their own mines should be the most important matter for congratulation, and perhaps they may be just a trifle anxious of the way which Otago has come rp to and passed the goldfields of the North. It is scarcely gratifying, after all that has been done to boom mining here, to find the South,

which did not resort to the booming expedient, is outstripping us. The fact should make us more than ever sceptical of the policy of booms, and teach us that *h« road to lasting prosperity does not lie in that direction. As to the prosperity of Otigo it is small in us to be jealous of a circumstance that nwst indirectly contribute to the interests of this part of the colony. The larger the output of gold from New Zealand the more will the attention of those in other parts of the world be drawn lo New Zealand mines as a' sphere for the profitable investment of capital, and depend upon it, we shall not be denied, the opportunity of proving the mineral riches of this' province."
