PEKIN, March 20. Sir Claude Mac Donald advised the 'Tsung-li-Yamen to grant Belgium a river frontage at Hankow. The Tsung-li-Yamen ! were astonished at the demand, and ze- [ fused to accede to it.

The British marines who were sent to Pekin to protect the consulate and British residents have been withdrawn. MarJh 23.
A compromise with regard to the extension of the Shanghai concessions has been arranged.
ROME, March 20.
Sig^nor Canovara, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, after ordering an ultimatum to be delivered to China, sent an urgent cablegram instructing the Italian representative to wait. The former arrived first — hence his delivery of the ultimatum to the Court at Pekin. March 21.
Admiral Greuet has started to take command of the Italian fleet in Chinese waters. The German Emperor wished him God speed.
LONDON, March 23. A Reuter despatch states that China absolutely refused Italy's demands. March 25.
A Reuter's despatch says that negotiations are proceeding between Britain and Russia which indicate an early and satisfactory settlement of the Chinese question. It is reported that Russia agrees to yield Niuchwang and takes compensation elsewhere.
