Chess Items.

In 1859 Freiherr Heydebrand und der Lasa went to Rio de Janeiro as the Minister for Prussia at the Brazilian Court. His influence and enthusiasm gave the game an impetus at Rio the' effects of which have never passed away, and Rip has at the present time several clubs and ably-conducted chess columns, and also several problemists of note. Sir George Newnes has, with his usual liberality in the cause of chess, offered to, bear the expense of the telegraphic match between the universities of the United States and those of England. This will probably amount to about £500. In an article in the B.C.M. on the dates of the openings, the conclusion is come to that only a few openings seem to have a real immortality, and these do not possess, of necessity, the merit of soundness.
