A competition for the solution of the above problem was held at the rooms of the Otago Chesß Club on the 4th inst., a prize of 10s 6d being offered by the club for the first complete solution handed in. Mr R. A. Cleland, Mr Balk, Mr Edwards, and Mr A. Macdonald entered. Mr Cleland handed in a nearly exhaustive analysis in 40 niinutes; Mr Balk did the same a few minutes later; and Mr Macdonald gave also the key move and two variations correctly. Mr Edwards set up the position wrongly, and therefore failed. The prize fell to Mr Cleland. [Instructions. — Begin to reckon from the upper left-hand corner.
