NEW ZEALAND NATIVES' ASSOCIATION.

The local branch of the above association gave a ladies' evening at the Choral Hall on, the 2nd. A large number of ladies responded to tho invitations given them, and appeared to thoroughly enjoy the night's entertainment provided. Mr A. C. Hanlon (president of the association) occupied the chair, and in a few preliminary remarks welcomed the ladies, auct expressed tho gratification it afforded the members of the association to see so many present* Mr Hanlon said it was thought advisable when; the association was formed to exclude ladies from it 3 membership, not because they were not anxious to have the fair sex amongst them, but because it was thought there would be a difficulty in providing a suitable form of amusement for ladies. He thought, however, thai; the native-born ladies in Dunedin might very, well form an association of their own. — (Applause.) If they did so they would receive the hearty support and co-operation of the New Zealand Natives' Association. — (Applause.X Such, an, association as he had mentioned had! been formed in Auckland, and he believed they, were getting on very well indeed. If the? ladies here did likewise, he and others would be very pleased to give as much assistance as they could, and when the ladies' association was formed, tho two. could occasionally corns bine, and give entertainments on similar lines to the one to be given that night. The picw gramme was then proceeded with. The as-» sociation orchestra, numbering 12 persons, rein dered. two selections in a very spirited manner-. Messr3 "Wright, Faulk, Warsaw, Joel (en.* cored), and Jago contributed song 3, the last* named gentleman, along with Mr James Swan* helping to amuse tho audience with humorous items. Mr Rayner proved himself a ver-." satile entertainer, and his stories, songs, and! playing of the banjo were very entertaining indeed. Messrß Cooke and Walsh played twp pianoforte duets, the iirst-najmed gentleman also acting as accompanist during the evening.
