ATTACK ON EEITISH ENGINEEKS. SHANGHAI, October 24. Lord Charles Beresford has arrived at Pekin on his commercial mission. He had an audience with the members of the Tsung-li-Yamen, who cordially welcomed him. •October 25. ! A party of Chinese soldiers wounded some English engineers engaged on the-Hankow-Pekin railway. October 26. Lord Charles Beresford expresses satisfaction at the results of his mission to Pekin. Thirty French marines have been sent to Pekin. October 27. The British construction of railways in China has led to further trouble with the Chinese troops. A party of soldiers attacked a British military officer, the railway engineer, and the Chinese secretary of the British Legation at Pekin. The soldiers also compelled the British engineers to desist from working on the railway from Pekin to Paoting-fu, 80 miles south of the capital. Sir Claude Macdonald demanded redress for these offences. The Tsung-li-Yamen consequently ordered the removal of the soldiers from Paoting-fu and punished the assailants. October 31. The Emperor of China shows no improvement in health. He refuses to take the medicine prescribed by French doctors. TOKIO, October 27. Kang-yui-wei, who proposed the reforms announced by the Emperor of China, but fled from the country to escape the wrath of the Dowager Empress, has arrived in ' Japan. j
