DEATH OF A COUNCILLOR. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 25.

The Hon. Joseph Shephard, M.L.C., died at Nelson to-day. « Mr Shephard, who was a journalist, was for some time editor of the Nelson Colonist. He represented Nelson for some time in the House of Representatives, but was called to the Council by the Stout-Vogel Government. Hejias been in bad health for some time past, and was unable to attend to his duties. The announcement of his death was made to the Council by the Hon. W. C. Walker, and on his motion the Council adjourned till 7.30 as a mark of respect. One of the Rothschilds is reported to have paid £200 for a butterfly. His extensive collection of butterflies is valued at £100,000. Labouring men have 312 working days a year in Hungary, 308 in the United States. 273 in England, and 267 in Russia.
