REPLIES TO QUESTIONS

In reply to Mr Fraser, who asked the Minister for Lands whether he would tak"e the necessary steps to place the administration of the Crown lands situated at the head of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea under the jurisdiction of the Otago Land Board, instead of aa at present under that of the Canterbury Land Board, the Minister stated that he saw no reason why the proposed change should not be eff ected, and he would have it seen to as soon aa possible. In asking the Minister for Public Works whether he will send a competent officer to Tasmania for the purpose of making himself acquainted with the practical results of the working of the light railways of that colony, also to gather such other information as would be useful to the Government in considering the question of constructing light railways in this colony, and to report to the Government, Mr E. G. Allen said that such lines would be especially suitable for the Dunedin-Peninsula, a district which had so far shared but little in the benefits of public expenditure. The Minister, in reply, said that there was at present no serious intention of proceeding with the construction of such railways, concerning which they had collected a lot of information from various parts of the world. Mr E. G. Allen asked the Minister for Railways whether he will take steps to improve the working of the Dunedin and Port Chalmers railway by — (1) Separating the goods traffic from the passenger traffio ; (2) providing passenger carriages with Westinghouse or other suitable brakes ; and (3) accelerating the speed of passenger trains. In reply, the Minister stated that it would take £250,000 to supply passenger carriages throughout the colony with Westinghouse brakes, and the remedy for the other things complained of by Mr Allen was to double the line.
