SUICIDE AT AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, September 15. Albeit Edward ' Hatton, who recently bought Van Breda's shirt factory, attempted to commit suicide this afternoon, nearly severing the windpipe. He is in a critical condition. It is understood personal worries were the cause. He was a man of a nervous, highly-strung temperament. Hatton was speaking to his foreman in the 'factory at 1.45 p.m. about being troubled with business worries, and went into his office, where he was found lying on the floor in his blood at 3.20 by one of the employees. A razor was broken by the force with which he had used it. Hatton could not speak. A letter was found in his pocket addressed to an intimate friend, stating that when the letter was received he would have done away with himself through business worries. Hatton is 42 years of age, single, and a temperate, industrious man. He has no relations in the colony. His friends state that there was no necessity for his apprehensions, as his business was being successfully carried on, but being of a nervous, excitable temperament, his new position of managing a large factory apparently involved too much worry for him. Doubts are entertained of Hatton' v s recovery. September 16. Hatton died on Friday evening at the hospital. ' # September 17. At the inquest a verdict was returned of "Suicide while temporarily insane." Tha following letter, written by deceased to Hodgson, his foreman, -was read : — "15 — 9 — 98. Dear Hodgson, — Difficulties seem to be creeping in, and I don't see my way to clear them, and rather than go too far I must end them. I leave everything in a personal way to you to fix up. as best you can. I have tried to do my best to all concerned and failed utterly ; so when this is opened I shall have done away with myself. — Yours truly, A. E. Hatton."
