THE MEAT MARKET.
NAPIER, September 15.— Messrs Nelson Bros. (Limited), Tomoana, received to-day the following cablegram from the C.C. and D. Company, London: — " Frozen meat market is qtiiet, but steady. Stocks of New Zealand mutton are moderate. To-day's quotations are: Best Canterbury, 3£d; best Dunedin and Southland, 3|d ; Napier and North Island, 3d. GRAIN AND PRODUCE REPORTS. Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Limited) report having held their usual weekly auction sale, when the attendance of buyers was small. Oats. — We offered only a few lines, all of which were good to best feed, and sold at from 2s li to 2s l£d. We quote: Fair to medium, 2s to 2s Id ; inferior, Is 6d to Is lOd, Wheat.— Only fowl feed offered, most of which was inferior. Good whole, 3s to 3s Id; broken and inferior, 2s 3d to 2s Bd. Potatoes. — The supply to hand this week is quite up to present requirements, and prices have dropped from 5s to 10s per ton. Prime Derwents, £6 12s 6d to £7; fair to medium, £6 53 to £6 7s 6d. Chaff. — Although the quantity coming forward is small, buyers do not seem very keen, and it is difficult to dispose of anything but prime, which brings from £3 10s to £3 13s 6d per ton ; fair to medium, £3 2s 6d to £3 7s 6d ; light and inferior, £2 10s to £3. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report that prices ruled as under at their auction sale on Monday: — Oats. — We submitted an average catalogue of fair to best feed. Competition was not keen, but the bulk of those offered were quitted at prices on a par with late quotations. Good to best feed sold at 2s Id to 2s l£d; medium, Is 11-1 to 2s per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat. — In milling quality, prime velvet is almost the only kind receiving attention. Today we offered several lines of fowl wheat, which sold at — for best, 2s lid to 3s 2d; medium, 2s 4d to 2s 9d per bushel (sacks in). Potatoes. — Supplies have been much heavier, during the past few days, and prices at the sale suffered a decline of about 10s per ton. We sold best Derwents at £6 10s to £6 17s 6d; medium, £6 to £6 5s per ton (sacks in). Chaff. — The supply of prime chaff forward is not large, and this class meets fair sale at quotations. Medium and light is not in request." We quote: Best oaten sheaf, £3 10s to £3 12s 6d. medium, £3 to £3 5s per ton (bags extra).
