SUICIDE CLUB FOR LADIES.

REMARKABLE STORY. A New York telegram of July 15 in the London Daily Telegraph states that the New York Suicide Club, which the police thought they had entirely suppressed when it was discovered and stopped between two and three years ago, has been either revived or a similar organisation has sprung up in succession to it. The regularity of<smysterious deaths in the city always occurring

about the same time of the month led "io the belief that such a club existed, but it is only now that the details of the affair have become known. The present suioide club seems to be confined to women ; its predecessor was for men only. In both the motive of self - destruction seems to have been the same — viz., that the act was compulsory under the rules of the club. Most of the women who have killed themselves when ordered have been young and goodlooking, and in no case has actual poverty been the contributing cause. The club is believed to have been started or revived six months ago. There was a limited membership, and further applicants could only be admitted as the vacancies occurred. Social meetings wore held regularly, and at a certain meeting each month the next victim was determined upon. The rules provided for a monthly death. The last instance of suicide occurred to - day. A girl named Bessie Dunbar called a friend into her room, and after saying, " It is my turn to die to-day," swallowed a quantity

of carbolic acid. The witness of the pairfr ful scene ran at once for a doctor, but by the' time he arrived the girl was dead. The' previous victim was Minnie Clark, who poisoned herself on June 15, at the corner of Broadway and Twenty-firtt street. Bessie Dunbar was with her at the time, and duly reported the suicide at the next meeting, of the club. The three preceding victims were Tillie Lorreson, Mary Crepoe, and Annie Cooper. The police are arresting the surviving members of the club, in an effort to prevent them taking their lives, and stop the spread of the suicide craze.

The Melbourne Cricket Club has contributed £100 to the fund for the benefit of H. Trolt, who is recovering very slowly.

At the Invercargiil sittings of the Supreme Court a case will come on in which a resident of Mataura, who ridea a bicycle, claims £500 damages from another resident, for injuries allsged to have been received by being ridden j over by a horse.
