m - a a kONP 05 *- September 18 !. (Received September 19, at 9.3 a.m.) The initial heats of the competition for the bporfcaman Challenge Cup were rowed yes terday. The contestants in the first heat were W ray and Barry. The Australian led from tho start, and headed Barry by a length as the .Thames Club shed was passed. This lead was inoreased to two lengths by the time the i nen. reached the concrete steps at the mile p dsl;. Barry was two and a half lengths in the i 'ear at this point. Wray faltered slightly, but recovered, and held the lead until choppy w; iter was encountered. Then Barry lessened the gap, and eventually won a close contest t iy a short half length. Time, 7min 25sec. In the second heat Bubear and Towns c ompeted. Bubear dispensed with the service b of a pilot boat. Towns soon took the lead, and passed Hammersmith Bridge three len .gths ahead of Bubear, who fouled a hulk, but gamely spurted, and at Barnes's was ne arly level. Towns again drew out clear and finished virtually alone, Bubear stopping • exhausted. Time, Bmin. The first of a series of five sailing ma! xjhes between Mr Wyllie's Maid of Kent (r spresenting the Medway Sailing Club) and . Mr Mark Foy's Sydney yacht Irex was f ailed over the Medway course of 13 miles. The Maid of Kent soon obtained a lead of from, eight to ten lengths, sailing evenly, whil e the Irex, with double the amount of ca nvas, vainly struggled after her, sailing gui lwaJe under all the way. The Irex fell ste adily astern, and at the end of the course v was llmin behind the Maid of Kent.
