WAIWERA.

September 1. — The weather for weeks has been unsettled. High cold winds have been, blowing almost continuously, sometimes accompanied by heavy showers of rain, hail, and snow, making it very severe on the young lambs that are now corning pretty thickly. Pastoral. — There has as vet Keen little growth with the grass. Fortunately, however, the turnips have held out well. I have heard of several deaths in some flocks, especially among the hoggets, generally from inflammation, whatever the cause may be. I have heard of several lines of sheep changing hands at very good prices, some having made quite a good thing by their turnip crops this year, especially those who bought good lines of lamb in the fall. Agricultural.— Ploughing is the chief order of the day, although some are sowing when the weather permits. A good deal of land will be under crop this season, chiefly in oats. Amusements. — We have lately been visited by Mr Don, Chinese missionary, with his magic lantern views, which were thoroughly appreciated by a bumper house. Mr Don congratuiatsd the Waiwera people ior their remarkably good order, attention, and singing. Port Charges. — I see that several leading commercial men waited on the Harbour Board ■ on behalf of the meat trade. Messrs Todd an^ Stronach — and I have no doubt the others alii — are made of the sort of stuff, and I am sure in their hands the societies they represent will find loyal support. Let us as farmers rally around them, and with combined efforts try and restore »our lost honours in the meat trade, and sink or swim by our own name, " Otago," and not " Prime Canterbury."
