LAKE COUNTY.

September 3. — At last growth has set in, and is once more reviving vegetation in these parts, gardening being the order of the day. Every amateur propagator of garden greens is \ying with each other in the production of the earliest peas and potatoes, even gold having to stand back in this strife in the arts of peace and plenty. However, so far, there is but a poor show of grass upon the hills, and owing to the long winter stock are in anything but a good condition. It is sincerely to be hoped that there will be no relapses into frost to retard the growth, but that everything in garden and field will be favoured with seasonable weather. Wakatipu Licensing. — The quarterly meeting of the committee was held yesterday at the Courthouse, Queenstown, at which all the members were present. The business was of an unimportant nature, only a few items of ordinary routine being dealt with. The subject of lights outside hotels was discussed, but no decision was come to. At the end of the business considerable discussion took place with regard to the chairman's action in docking the travelling expenses of members, which is of sufficient importance to be considered at an early occasion. - Arbor Day. — Queenstown celebrated Arbor Day last Wednesday, which proved rather ■wintry and blowy. However, 150 children turned out and a goodly number of townspeople. The programme of former years was repeated, and the event celebrated with, much eclat and enthusiasm. Signs of Summer. — To-day the QueenstownIPembroke coach started on its first trip of the season with a full load of passengers and chatties. Looking at the Crown Eange covered thickly with snow, one could not suppress some little anxiety for the horses, and only in a less degree for the passengers and driver. Negotiating our hill saddle at this time of year is no light matter Arrow Horticultural Society. — Following the example of Queenstown, Arrowtown is going to have its society in this line. The flower growers at the latter if not so numerous as in the former place, are none the less enthusi- j astic, and no doubt a good show on a moderate scale can be got up. A meeting to arrange the preliminaries has been called, and as no time is to be lost, it is hoped that everything will go smoothly, and success will be attained. While on this subject it may be mentioned that the Arrow Corporation have had the slope at the back of the town planted with willows and marcrocarpa, which in a few years will present quite a pleasing aspect. Arrow Jockey Club. — A meeting of the subscribers of this newly-formed body is called to arrange ifor one day's sport. The 9th November next will be probably the day eelected for the event. The sporting element is pretty strongly represented in the Arrow division of Wakatipu, so that the fixture may be safely prophesied to turn out a success.
