PRESERIVATION INLET.

August 18. — The weather here is fine, healthy, and in the sunny lowlands fairly warm ; but on ihe hill tops the snow lies deep. We are not at present being troubled with our recordsbreakmg rain.

Saw milling. — The sawmill has put in a fortnight's holidays — in fact, it is seldom working ifull time. A good percentage of the timber Bawii is shipped to Dunedin.

Airusements. — Owing to the hilly nature of this place but little outdoor amusement can be well indulged in. Even picnicking, which is Jrampant in summer, is laid by for its winter ftest.

MINING.

The most important late development is the new Golden Site's strike on a new reef. It \yiil be remembered that the Golden Site, whilst up the very rich reef, ventured too aiear the surface, with the consequence that the 'Wilson River broke through and completely submerged the mine, stopping all work. Since 4hen the company has been re-formed under the designation of " The Golden Site Extended Company," with a capital of about £20,000, to endeavour to again strike the reef, which was easily worked and very payable. With great perseverance the work has been since progressing. A new shaft was sunk further up the tivpr, and after passing under the river with &, drive nearly 100 ft in length, a reef has been fetruck. Whether it is one of much permanence jor not will not be known for a few weeks, but indications so far are very favourable.
