LAWRENCE.
August 22.— There were 22 applicants for the position of librarian to the Tnapeka Athensum— J5 ladies and seven gentlemen. The committee, after a gcod deal of balloting, appointed Miss Eva Tan ton (daughter of Mr John Tanton, one cf our oldest and most respected townsmen), and the appointment meets with much favour amongst the subscribers.
Social.— A social was held in Trinity Schoolroom on Tuesday evening:, the principal object in connection therewith being to show the esteem in whnh Miss Mary Thompson is held by the congregation, ond acknowledging the services rendered during the loug time she has been co nected with the church as honorary organist. The Yen. Archdeacon Beaumont was made the mouthpipce of the congregation, and in veiy feeling and appropriate temi3 expressed regret at Miss Thujpsou f-ovcaiiug her connection with the church, ami a.hn fchdurss at being privileged, on bi'bulf of thi enrgreptiou, to present her with son*? tokens of their appreciation of her long service?. He also refened to her approaching marriagi 1 . and wished her cv.ry blessing in this life and in tin: life to come. He ihea presented her with a valuably gold watch and gold br-jcetetfrom the eotip-egdtton, and a tur.dsome dressing case from the choir. The biidreroom-elect, (Mr Thomas Pilling) rcsponde-1 on behalf of Miss Thompson, and hopeil the kind wishes expressed towaros her would be realised iv the life they were al«.ut to enter. Weather. -The weather 3« now more favourable for farming operations, and the roads are becoming moie passable for traffic, so it is to be hoped our up-country fiiends will be able to get their Jocg-talked-of "goods away from the Lawrence railway fitßtion, the authorities of which are in no way responsible for the delay. Mining enteipriee is still active.^ Another company has been formed with a capital of ,£ISOO to w ork a cement claim on Wetherstone's Flat. I understand the whole of the shares were taken up greedily, and amuuber. of hungry speculators left with their appetites unsatisfied. Mobt of the dredges seem to be doing well in the various parts of ' V (M^ii"!, also the sluicing companies^ except ■ ,- wiiu'b i 'a fchorfc of water by having their Lap conilt, high country, and blocked wohv fi- v.iow.
On the whole the outlook all round is f&vou*> able. T'armeis, miner--, and busiaeci people looh foiward with fi).ithand hope.
