(From Our Own Correspondent.)

LYELL. August 19,

Alpine. — The mine manager reports : '" Tn the stopes at the back of No. 10 main south level the reef is from 4ft to 6ft in width, bub the stone is not qii ite ao clean as it was last week. In No. 11 level a cros9oufc has been put into the hanging wall for a distance of 30ft, and a crosscut has also been driven into the footwall for a distance of 9ft. In each case the respective walls were mil at the distance driven, while in the foohv<\ll iin'? \-*-va few veins of quartz, 'flu- extension of th=! level has now boon resumed, pik! a further distance of 4ft driven. I am turning the drive slightly into the footwall. Sloping Ims been steadily corried on at the back of tho drive, no change having taken place either in the size or quality oE the rc-ff. The work of cutting out a chamber in No. 10 level hnfi been put in hand, and will b? completed early in the week. A contract for the extension of No. 9 level north has been let, but very little distance has yet been driven. A reef, 3ft in width in the top of the drive and Ift in the bottom, is being carried along. Fair prospects can be obtained in the stone, but the driving is very hard. During the week 2.30 tons of stone have been sent to the battery. Tho scraping of top plates yielded lOloz amnlagam from 225 tons."
