Vienna international Tournament.
Janowski and Baikd. Ruy Lopez.
(Notes by E. Kemeiiy, in the American Chess Magazine for July) (.v) Better perhaps was kt x p. If then P-Q 4, Black answers p-q kt 4 and p-q 4. If, however, li-K. 1, then kt-b 4, b-k % and kt-k 3, with a pretty even development. The text move in connection with p-q 3 and p x p gives White an advantage. (b) Hardly advisable, for it weakens this q kt p. It favours, however, the White Xt to Xt 1, for if Xt to Q 5, Black may answer kt x kt p. (c) He could not play kt x p on account of Q-Q 5. The text move threatens kt x b, followed by kt x kt p, and White is obliged to guaid his KP. (d) Had he played p x p, c.p., then P x P and B-R 3 might have followed. The text move is hardly satisfactory, since it does not give the queen an advantageous development. (c) It was perhaps necessary to force away the Kt. The move, however, has a serious disadvantage. It weakens the q p, and will enable the opponent to enter at q 5. (f) 'Better than X P x B, for it gives White a chance to pursue the attack with P-K 5. White now has an advantage in position. (g) A disastrous error. Black, it seems, did not take into consideration the Q R move, which forces Black to answer k-kt 1. Instead of k-r 2 Black should have played kt-kt 3, followed eventually by b-b 1. (n) He could not otherwise guard the k b p. White now wins brilliantly by sacrificing the Kt. (i) He had no better play ; Qx R P eh, R-B 3, and R-Kt 3 eh was threatening. (j) Resigns, for he cannot guard against the thieatened mate. If kt-k 3, then P x Xt, followed by Q-Kt 7, mate.
