THE POULTRY AT THE DUNEDIN SHOW.
With regard to the poultry show of the Dunedin Fanciers' Club, held last week, it was, all things considered, very poor. From many sources I heard thai the cause of the paucity of entries was the neglect to import outside judges. I understand that the committee recognise the necessity for a change in this respect, and that steps are about to be taken to raise funds to bring over firstclass me'o next year. As regards the various classes: — The game, taken on the whole, were splendid birds, Mr B. Hart's pile cock being particularly good. The entries in bantams have fallen off, but there were some fine birds shown. In the Indian game class there was strong competition. The Avinning pullet Avas a splendid bird. In the hens, I think the judge made a mistake in placing Mr Myers's birds. His other entry was a better bird to my fancy. In the Hamburg class the entries Avere not large, but there were some splendid birds, the blacks being the best. In the Plymouth Rock class there Avere only three ' entries, but' they Avere all fine specimens. In the Spanish home nice birds Avere shoAvn, Mr Smeaton's cockerel, which took first, draAving a lot of attention. In the Avhite Leghorn class there Avas very little competition in cocks and hens, but in the cockerels and pullets competition was very keen. Mr Sinclair's Avinning cockerel is a splendid specimen, and also his Avinning pullet. The pair are the best that have been shoAvn here for some time, and I doubt if they can be beaten in Nbav Zealand. In the browns, Mr Miller had all his oAvn Avay, the judge's opinion of a Leghorn appearing to be very different to that of Mr Rogen, Avho favours very light birds. This is a point Avhich I think should be cleaved up by Avriting Home and getting a description of the colour of an up-to-date brown Leghorn. It is annoying to see a bird placed first in a show by one judge, and Avhen shoAAii Avith another judge not to get a place, although shoAvn in the same company. The Avinning cockerel is a splendid bird," but rather dark in colour. The Avinning pullet is a line-bodied bird, with good shape, and avouW be hard to beat. j In the Langshan class there Avere some ' fine birds, but Mr Rogen's and Double Bros.' birds Avere greatly missed. There Avere not many Houdans shoAvn, and Avith one or two exceptions they are not tip to the mark. Crested birds do not seem to do well about here, owing no doubt to the number of Avet days we have. 'The crest , keeping Avet is apt to cause roup. In the Polish class Messrs Aitken and Son carried off all the honours Avith some very nice birds. These birds appear to be dying out, being more a fancy fowl than anything j else, and requiring a lot of attention. I The Brahma class Avas very small, Mr . Myoi-3, of Chrislohurch, and Mr Bannister, ' of Wellington, not showing, and their fine birds were greatly missed. The Dorking cla&s attracted a lot of attention, there being some fine birds shown. By tlio way, t noticed that a first prize bird in the dark Dorkings had white ears. There Avore very few Andalusians shown, but the quality was very good. The winning ronkcrel is a 'jplendid bird, also the firdt prize pullet, the latter being very largo without being coarse. Silver Avvandottea are steadily gaming
[ ground, being a good all-round bird._ Some ; of the birds shown had splendid markings. The Minorcas were the lai-^e~t cla^s m the ' ■ show, being recognised as the best bird for > utility. In the cockerels the quality Avas not i ' up to last year. The Avinning cockerel is a ) nice bird, but on the small side. The comb • also is not Aery firm. The second prize bird • is also Aveak in the comb. The third prize ; bird has very bad legs. Several of the birds . havo very poor plumage, being very dull in S the feather. With the exception of one or i tAVO tho faces are poor. " The Avinning hen is 1 a A r ery nice bird, Avith plenty of size. Some [ I very nice pullets were shoAvn, the Avinner i being a beauty, Avith the exception of her • face, which is very pale with just a sign of Avhite in it. I There Avere some very nice Orpingtons [ 1 shoAvn, with plenty of si#e and colour. ! | It seems a pity that the show is held so late j in the season, several of the best birds about { not being shoAvn owing to OAvners object- \ ing to break up their breeding pens. 1 think ' . next year the society should try and have I the slioav at least a month earlier. | I append the prize list for this section:— ' I POULTRY. 1 (Judges: Messrs N.
