THE RESTORED LICENSES.

On Friday it was made known by the chairman of the Racing Conference that four additional totalisator permits had been approved by the Colonial Secretary, the Alexandra, Vincent, Lower Valley, and Taratahi-Carter-ton Clubs getting one each. Two of the directions for unasked amalgamation are therefoie withdrawn. What the moving force has been does not appear, nor is it necessary to be known The Hon. J. Carroll has evidently become satisfied that the Wairarapa amalgamation and also the union of the two Otago goldfields clubs ought not to be insisted on, and while it might bo interesting and possibly useful for future guidance to learn how the repentance was effected, we can very well dispense with that knowledge and rest satisfied that so far as these clubs are concerned substantial justice has been done. As to the merits of the Wairarapa case I know nothing beyond hearsay With tho Otago mailer, on the other hand, Otago sportsmen are all more or less familiar ; and now that the incident is ended happily, by both Alexandra and Vincent having their licenses restored, I may bo permitted to remark that llioao of us who protected against tho suggestion to amalgamatedid so with a clear conscience, and not from any feelings of mere provincial patriotism. The, olubs therefore owe nobody thanks. Tlwy
