SOUTHLAND LAND BOARD.
Tho meeting of the board, held on Friday, August 12, was attended by the Chief Commissioner (Mr D. Barren) a;id all the members.
Josepn Alderron, who applied for section 5, block XVII I, Longwood, was instructed to make application under the Mining Districts Land Occupation Act, and dopcsiii £11 13 as survey and lease fees.
Tho Under-secrc-tary for Lands informed tho board that it was not proposed to amend the Land Act so as to authorise exchange of o.r.p. licenses for leases in peipetuity ; also that the Governor has affirmed the resolution of tho board withdrawing from sale unsolected sections in block XXIII, Invercargill Hundred.— Resolution not to be given effect to until Anderson and Harper pay royalty on sections.
David Lamb drew attention to the wholesale manner in which the warden wa3 disposing of sections in block IV, Waikaka township. — To be informed that the board cannot interfere.
R. Tipper, jun., on behalf of settlers at Clifclen, requested reservation of section 5, Chfden township, for a public hall site. — Government to be so recommended.
Nicholas "Wain and James Bradley applied for about 20 acres of the township reserve. Mem vale, on 'ease in perpetuity. — Government to be recommended to subdivide the reserve into village homestead sections.
Agnea Mitchell was granted a grazing license over sections 4 and 5, block IV, Wocdend township, at 5s per annum.
Francis King. Otara, claimed compensation for land taken for sites for dams out of section 7a, block VII. — Left in Commissioner's bands.
Chas. Beaage surrendered license over blocks 111 and IV, Dacre, and Thc-i Lee applied Icr a 14 years' lease of same, with right of cultivation.—To be offered at auction at 15s per block with right of cultivation and two-thirds valuation for fencing. Hugh M'Kenzie and John Wither applied for adjustment of boundaries between Runs No. 2b and 3. — Resolved that board consents to the adjustment
John Tiffin applied to purchase section 57, Oraka township, at tire advertised price.— To deposit cost of advertisement and one-fifth depodit. M.icKay Bros, asked to be allowed to pay royalty on sawmill area No. 385 in two nistalme> ts. — To pay half cost and give approved bill at bix months for balance.
John M'Kenzic's and Michael Devanney's applications under the Land and Land fot Settlements Acts were granted for land in In'evcargill Hundred and Beaumont respectively. A Taylor's apuhcation under the Minirg Districts' Laud Occupation Act for section 10; block X, Chatkm, was held over tin next meeting.
The applications of A. Pearson and Mrs E. A. Smith for lard in *he Long wood district were granted, and Henry Barry's application for land in the same district was held over till next meeting, the statutory time not having elapsed The consideration o[ R. H. Murray's application for two sections in Longwood was also deferred until word was received from him as to his intention to reside on the land.
The application of Charles Bcange to effect a transfer to Joseph Stokes of sections on blocks X, XI, and XII, Dacre township, was sanctioned.
Daniel Sullivan, Thos. Coombes, and A!»>-. Munro were granted titles for sections in East Gore, New River Hundred and Forest Hill Hundred respectively.
Five requisitions from Waiau Crown tenants for tinia to pay rent were considered, and tho applicants were granted until October }. Four tenants on Papatotara improved farm settlement had (heir sections forfeited, and one in tho Ilokonui district.
M. M'Donild, Alton, asked to be allowed to transfei 20 acres to the Education department, with house, in exchmge for Niohol's section and school reserve. — Application refused; as to school rite to apply to the Education Board 1 .

Tho report of the committee of the boarcfc on .their inspection of tho P&p&totara settlement wa3 to the effect that too many, single men had obtained sections, gofe all the Government work they could, and then deserted their holdings. A good deal of the sawmilling timber on the settlement had been cut mto and fired, l .* ! -<- ing tho remainder bo patchy as to bo of Jiitle value. Wallace- County Council notified that they would undertake the work on road north of section 6, block X, Centre Hill, at once if William M'lntosh's fourths were paid. — Received; fourths on run 23 to paid on the understanding that they be expended as required by the board. The Knapdaie Road Board forwarded schedule 'of the thirds and lourths accrued from Novomber 1, '97, to January 31, '98, with proposals for expenditure. — Approved. K. Scobie asked that the fourths accrued on run 10 be expended on drainage. — County council to be asked to hold over the expand^ luro of fourths until the consent of the Minister is obtained to their being spent on drainage. The board then went into committee to consider several reports of the ranger on land valuations and forfeited sections of which ha had taken possession.
