ST. ANDREWS LITERARY INSTITUTE.

i There was a numerous gathering at the St. 1 Andrew's Literary Institute on Monday, • when the Rev. Dr Waddell delivered his third lecture on the character studies of /'The Choir Invisible," the character in thi3 instance being "John Gray, Schoolma&ler." The lecture, as may be expected, was interesting to a degree, and was listened to with the closest attention during the hour and ahalf which was occupied in its delivery. The lecture was the one which, of the three given, perhaps lent itself least to compression. Dr Waddell found . the keynote to the character of the i schoolmaster in a yeise from Walter C. .Smith's poem " Olrie Grange," "For all 1 through life I see a cross, where sons of Gjd . yield up their breath." In his discourse he sought to trace out in some detail a process by which Gray's character was developed through the defeat of love forced upon him by superior forces, and later on the defeat of love accepted voluntarily in the interests of the higher life. At the close of the lecture the audience gave expression to their approI ciation of the literary treat provided thorn by i Dr Waddell in an unusually fervid outburst i of applause.

The Clinton footballers defeated the Olutha Pirates by 18 points to 4-. The Inspector of Police was notified by wire on Thursday of the death of a Chinaman named Ah Chong, at Waikaia, through being jambed in a tail-race.
