PARLIAMENT HOUSE ON FIRE.
A NARROW EBCJAPE.
(From Ouk Own Cobhespondent.) WELLINGTON, August 11. Some consternation was caused in the House this evening about 9 o'clock when it ' became known that a fire had broken out. in I one of the rooms in the wooden portion o£ i Parliament Buildings, members '■ noticed a considerable amount of smoke, and there was a smell of burning, but most people al first thought that the chimneys we it ) not working properly. A search was,, however, made, and it was soon discovered , that the smoke was issuing from the room occupied by the Minister for Education. The lose was promptly run out and part of the flooring torn up, when it was found that the tiro was blazing in the &pace between tho floor -and the ceiling beneath. A stream of water was poured on, and the danger was soon over. The fire was caused by a defect in the fireplace. The whole building, together with the valuable library, certainly iiad a very narrow escape, for had the fire broken out during the adjournment, between. ; half-past 5 and half-past V, or after the llouso ! lu'l arisen for the night, it would probably • have got such a hold that ir would have been I very dilficult, if not impossible, to save the : edifice.
