In accordauce with resolutions recently p&ssea 1 , the MaryleboDe Cricket Ciub have decided to invite the six counties leading at the cud of this sejsou's championship contest to euch nominate a representative on a beard to be apt ointtd for the mausgtmenfc of the test matches" between Eugteud and Australia in 1899.
The Victorian Cricket Council have discuFStd tLe attitude of the Melbourne Cricket Club in re r erence to tending & team to Englaud. The speakers strongly resented the action of that club, and alleged that an attempt was beiDg made to override the council. Consideration of the matter was postponed to a future meeting pending t'evelopments. The Euglieh papera to hand by the San Francisco mail contain reports of matches to the 2nd July.
The M.C.O. and Ground gained a remarkable victory over Cambridge University on June 25, for while the Can tabs scored 142 (G. L. Jessop 47) and 170 (C. J. Burnup 32), the M.C.C. made 325 for the loss of only three wickets (F. Mitchell 161, G. W. Wright 77, G. J. Mordaunt not out 48). In the first innings of the University Roche took eight wickets for 66 runs, and in the second Attewell six for 58.
The M.C.C. and ground were beaten by Oxford University on June 28. The former made 84 and 97, F. W. Stocks (six for 28) and E. C. Lee (six for 42) bowling with great success, and the Dark Blues scored 109 and 74 for two wickets. Handford got seven wickets for 37 in the University's first innings. Derbyshire beat Leicestershire on June 29 by an innings and 31 runs. Scores: Derbyshire 214 (S. 11. Evershed 66, Walter Sugg not out 42, Storer 40, Bagshaw 32) ; Leicestershire 71 and 112 (C. X de Trafford 39). The two Davidsons proved irresistible with the ball for the winners.
Notts gained a seven wickets' victory over Kent on June 29, the latter making 136 (W. Rashleigh 74) and 227 (Alec Hearne 117) to their opponents' 143 (A. O. Jones 60) and 223 for three wickets (A. O. Jones 69, Shrewsbury 61, Attewell not out 34, J. A. Dixon not out 30).
Although "Jack " Kearne bowled with remarkable success in both innings, Middlesex were defeated by Lancashire by 4-4 runs. Tho latter made 228 (Tyldesley 96, Ward 53) and 143, while Middlesex scored 147 (A. E. Stoddart 36) and 180 (F. G. J. Ford 35, H. B. Hay- i man 33, P. F. Warner 31). Hearne took in all 16 wickets for 114 runs, and for the winners Lancaster captured seven in the second innings for 25 runs. On June 29 Surrey dofeated Somersetshire by nine wickets at the Oval. Scores : Somerset 140 (Tyler 33) and 327 (L. P. H. Palairet 112, S. M. J. Woods 69, H. T. Stanley 43, A. E. Newton 34); Surrey, 315 (Abel 81, Holland 45, K. J. Key 32) and 153 for one wicket (Abel not out 65, Holland not out 55, Brockwell 33). Surrey had only an hour and three-quarters in which to make the runs in their second innings. At Bradford, Yorkshire defeated Essex by an innings and 38 runs, scoring 278 (Lord Hawke 62, Denton 46, Brown 42, F. S. Jackson 33) to the southerners' 64 and 176 (A. P. Lucas 49), Rhodes (eleven for 92) bowled, very destructively, for the home team. A meeting of the committee of the Otag< Cricket Association held on Friday was at tended by Messrs J. Allan (in the chair), J. Edwards, A. Restieaux, D. Smyth, W. H. Skitch, and W. Maclean (hon. secretary). A letter waa received from the Schools' Cricket Association alleging that tho NorthEazsfc "Valley School, the winners of the schools' shield for the past season, played certain boys who were not bona fide scholars, and they asked that the shield be nob awarded for the season 1897-98. — It was moved by Mr Smyth, seconded by Mr Restieaux, and carried unanimously, that in the opinion of the meeting the North-East Valley School won the shield fairly, and after due consideration they could not endorse the opinion arrived at by the Schools' Association. A letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council asking whether, to facilitate arrangements, the association would guarantee £50 towards the tour to Australia. — The secretary was instructed to notify the council that the question of a guarantee was premature, and that, they preferred to wait replies from the various Australian associations before giving a definite reply. The date of the annual meeting was fixed for Saturday, September 17. Messrs B. T. Ringer and E. 0. Leary were appointed auditors.
