JUDGE'S REPORT.
The Secretary, Southland P.P. and D. Society. Sir,— l have much pleasure in submitting lo you my report on the dogs judged by me at your tmmial show. Before discussing the merits of the exhibits, I wish to thank your committee, yourself, and the class steward for the carelul and expeditious way in which the dogs were brought into the judging ring, and tfor the assistance and courtesy afforded inc.
The first class to come under my notice ■was the Newfoundland, in which there wag, I am sorry to say, only three entries, the wintaing dog, Captain Macdonald's Tweed, standIng well out from the others, being a very •well-built dog, with a good head, nice cleancut muzzle, nice small cars, and good eye; Sic has good legs and feet, but seems to have •an almost imperceptible lameness. In St. Bernards the first and second were two very good dogs. Lion XII, placed first, is a fine specimen, his chief laults being too long in head, and his coro'urt he is almost a self-coloured dog, and could do with a little anore white. The second dog, St. Leonard (a 10-months-old puppy), should develop into Bornething really good as he grows older; he is a well-put-together dog, but could do with a little more tan marking. A most excellent class of black curly-coated xetrievers was put into the ring. The winning dog, Master Glitters, was shown in splendid nick. He is rather coarse in head, good ears, could do with a little darker eye, was shown in tip-top coat. He has good shoulders, fcut is rather wide in chest, and could do ■with more depth. He is a trifle too long in body to be symmetrical. The second and third 'dogs in this class, Rewi Black Pearl and Eewi Rodger, were shown in shocking bad condition; had the former been in as good toick as the winning dog my decision might Slave been different. Pearl is a beautifulheaded bitch, with splendid dark eye, she is rather full in ear, has good legs and feet, good body, but could do with a little more size. Rewi Rodger is another good dog, irather strong in head. Zoey (v.h.c.) was close up; she also is strong in head, and scarcely |dark enough in eye. The spaniels were a very good class, especially the black rockers. The rough-coal., d collies were a splendid lot, and a credit to Southland. In the open class (dog) Hellvellyn, placed first, is a very nice flog, beginning to be slightly cheeky, a good bodied dog with good legs and feel, carries his tail a trifle gay, has a good coat. Major Drummond was second, a good dog, splendid head, nice eye and expression, carries his «ars well, a good-bodied dog, fails in legs and ffeet. The third dog, Bob, was shown much 100 fat; he is very square built, and is too short in head. Open class (bitches) did .not fcring much competition; the winner, Benjnore Beauty, is a nice bitch, but was shown out of coat. The novice class included two Very good bitch puppies, which gave me some trouble in separating. Yn-Ys Lass and Otapiri Hazel will be heard of again, or I am much mistaken. Lass is slightly longer in fcead than Hazel, for which reason I gave her preference. They are both good-headed dogs, with, dark eyes and nice expression, good body and coat. Otapiri Monarch (third) is a dog •with an excellent coat, but is rather thick in head. The local and puppy classes brought out a splendid entry, the placed dogs being those already mentioned in the other classes. The puppy class contained two veTy promising six-months-old youngsters. Taking the classes all over, the quality was very good, and would compare very favourably ■with any of the shows held in other parts of s*Tew Zealand. — I am, etc.,
P. S. Brobib.
