SOUTHLAND NOTES.

Br Unite.

The Southland Poultry, Bird, Pet, and Dog Society held its twelfth annual show in the Zoalandia Hall, Esk street, Invercargill, on the 10th and lllh inst. The entries this year wore more coniiiiod to local exhibitors than has been the case heretofore. With tho exception of some 50 entries in the poultry sec tion the exhibits were all owned in Southland. This reflects great credit on Southland fanciers, considering the large entry ; but conversely it does not say much for tho sporting spirit possessed by northern fancieis. The total entry was 4-48, comprising 258 poultry, 67 pigeons, 2 canaries, 20 pets, and 101 clogs. The show was 0n.9 pi fch@ most ausogggful

the society has held for some years. For the last two years the society has had a considerable loss each year, culminating last year in a loss of £40 and a deduction of 20 per cent, in the priza money besides. This year it is a pleasure to be able to report that the tide appears to have turned, and that the show, in addition to being a success in all other respects, will be so financially. The attendance of tho pxiblic on the first clay was the largest on record. In the poultry section some splendid quality was noticeable, especially in the game,. Hamburg, Minorca, and Langshan classes. Mr J3. Hart (Lawrence), Messrs Double Bro"., and M* J. Lloyd were the most successful exhibitors.

The pigeon section rhowed a considerable falling off in number, duo no doubt to the absence of" one large exhibitor. The principle exhibitors were Messrs R. H. Joyce and W. J. Noble.

Dogs were very numerous, collies predominating. The arrangements in connection with the show were excollent, reflecting great credit on the show superintendent, Mr (I. R. Joyce, and his assistants. A very pleasing feature was the enthusiasm exhibited by the com mittee and the fanciers generally. That Hie enthusiasm is catching is evidenced by the largo number of sales that took place during the show. Mr F. Rogen judged the poultry and pigeons, Mr W. J. Hyndrnan canaries axid pets. The dogs -were divided, Mi- Rogen. making the awards in the greyhound and terrier classes, the others being entrusted to Mr P. S. Brodie. The judging throughout seemed to give general satisfaction.
