August 15. — The Rev. Mr Don gave a capital ' lecture on Japan in the Presbyterian Hall on : Wednesday last, the audience being a full one. ] The Rev. J. Chisholm, president or the Mutual ] Improvement Society, under whose auspices the , lecture was delivered, presided. The views of , Japan was really exquisite, coloured as they j ivere by native artists in Yokohama, and both these and the lecture were highly appreciated. , The lantern was lent and manipulated by , Messrs Mahoney and Petrie. , Foresters' Bail. — This event ct.me off on Friday last in the Skating Rink, the occasion be- -\ ing the thirty-third anniversary of the opening . ot the local court. The gathering was one of the largest ever seen in that rink, and the j grand march was a particularly pretty one, the regalia of the Foresters themselves adding to " the coloiu- and brightness of the scene. The j bail continued until about d a.m. Mr T. Bew- . ley catered, and the rnu3ic was supplied by \ Messrs Hamann and Haigh. I Myriorama. — .Fuller's Myriorainn, which has ] attained considerable popularity in the country j , districts, paid us a return visit on Monday last, I , and the audience at St. George's Hall was a ■ j viry large one. The programme consisted of a < large number of views bearing on the Spanish- j American war, and was accompanied by a meagre description of the places shown. A ■ number of American warships were also thrown ' j on the sorepn^and members of the company 1 rendered several -items which were illustrated , by limelight views. : ( On Leave.— Mr W. F. Watters, first assistant j at the Tokomairiro District High School, has ] obtained a month's leave of absence on account 3 of ill-health, and lias gone to Oamaru for a , change. His place is being filled by Mr H. C. ' { Jones, of the relieving staff. 1 j A Kaitangata Bridge.— A meeting represent- c ing the local bodies interested was held at Kai- ' tangata on Saturday last to consider the matter of erecting a bridge in jslace of the Kaitangata punt. It was resolved that the Kaitangata Bore ugh Council and the Bruce County Council j act in conjunction in the matter, to ask Govern- j rnent for a £ for £ subsidy, and to find the feel- j ' ing of the ratepayers in the matter. *
