Agriculture 1. — Operaiions under this head are fairly well advanced, and are now making good progress. Grain-growers are evidently confident that good prices will be maintained for another season, as the area contemplated to be sown is larger than usual.

Pastoral. — Sheep on turnips had a rather trying time during July, owing to so much moist ' weather, and especially was this the caso where the subsoil is of an impervious nature, as the turnips got completely covered with mud. Generally speaking, however, they have watered well, a2id turnips will last for somo time yei. Lamling on one or two farms lias commenced, but it will not be general lor another thr;e weeks.

Obituary. — Mr Frederick Chittock passed away on Friday, sth inst., at the ripe age of 84 years. The funeral took place on Monday, and the remains were interred in the Gore cemetery beside those of his wife, who predeceased him by 15 years. He leaves a large family, several of whom are settled in the locality, to mourn his demise. Sickness. — Sickness in one form or another is prevalent throughout the district at present. Influenza is Ihe principal complaint, and the attack is in some cases a pretty severe one.

Entertainment. — A magic lantern entertainment was given at Merino Downs school on Tuesday evening last. The proceeds, amouncing to £2 6s, were in aid of the Sunday school fund.
