IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT.
London, August 3. In the House of Commons, Mr Chamberlain moved that further grants be made to the British West Indies upon the lines recommended by the Sugar Bounties Commission. He said there must be deficits in these islands until the sugar industry was restored to its normal state. He treated these grants as belonging to the necessary expenses of the Empire, which now gave such amounts in mere doles. The grant was carried. August 5. The Government were defeated in the House of Lords by 40 to 38 on the clause cf the Vaccination Bill recognising conscientious objections to vaccination. In the House of Commons, Mr Balfour stated that the Government would anxiously consider an old pension scheme in the immediate future. August 6. The House of Commons reinstated the conscience clause in Vaccination Bill which was struck out in the House of Lords.
