Mr J. A. Gilvuth is gazetted chief vefceri* narian to the Government. The services have been accepted of No. 2 Company Watkato Mounted Rifles and the Auckland Volunteer Bearer Company. In the latter A. O. Knight and W. H. Parkes are appointed surgeon captains, and the Rev. Mr West honorary chaplain. The following Otago companies are formed into a battalion of mounted rifle volunteers -. —A, Olago Hussars : B, North Otago Mounted Rifles ; C, Southland Mounted Rifles ; D, Clutlia Mounted Rifles. The designation of G Battery, Invercargiil, is changed to the Oreti Rifles. Notice is given that the registration of the Allandale Miners' Union under the Conciliation Act is cancelled on the ground that the union has ceased to exist. The estimated population of the colony on June 30 was 733,555, exclusive of Maoris.
