"Whenever two humorists start out lecturing or giving reading lotus together, one may look for lots of funny stories. Thos-e of James Whit comb Riloy and the late Hill Nye arc now equalled by two other "opuiar American writers, Edward W. Towngeivl, wl-ose book " Chimioie Faddon," dealing with the adventures of a Bowery boy (a species of New York rowdy) took America by storm, and John Kendric Bangs.
While they were in a western town one night, Mr Bangs gravely announced thai he "would be followed by Mr Tov/nrend, wl.o will read from his autobiography, ' Chimmie JTadden.' "
When it came to Mr TWnsend's turn, however, he had his revenge.
Speaking of autobiographies," he remarked, '" Mr Bangs, as you know, made his first success with 'The Idiot.' " And the audience howled.
