TAIEKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Taieri County Council, held on Friday, was attended by the Chairman (MV C. Samson), Crs Harrison, Miller, Chisholm, Oughfcon, Todd, Douglas, and Peat.

INSPECTOR'S BBPOBT,

The Inspector of Works reported that, in company with Mr Freeman, he inspected two sites on the Taieri River, about half a mile above Flat Stream. Both sites were suitable for a cage, but the lower one was the most convenient in the meantime. He would suggest the erection of a cage at a cost of about £20. The ground on either eide was vf>ry rough, and would be steep, bufc it would do "for a horse track The cost on the Flat Stream or railway aide, woxild be about £12, and on the Stoker's side £25. The total cost of the work would be £57. The timber for the Henley Bridge repairs waa to hand, and tbe work would be proceeded with nexfc-week. The coast bridges hadbeeD repaired duringthe month. They would now be good for a few years ab least, except the Brighton one, which was rather shaky, especially the under works or abutment. The ditch at the end of tbe Henley bridge on the HenleyBerwick road was really dangerous. The box' required to be made longer, and the road made up to the height of the river bank, no that a team could get on to the bridge when coming down the river. The cost would be £12. The following riding works urgently required attention : — Tho cleaning ouft of Dake's ditch in East Taieri ; the metalling of Gordon road, rear Mr John Findlay's ; the gravelling of the Outran! to Berwick road, via Huntly, naa? the Lees Crsek. — Ifc was resolyed that it be an instruction to the inspector to have a cage erected ovt:r the Taieri River at the site referred to in the reporb ; that 15fb be added to the length of the box at the mouth of the A dtain, and that' the formation be widened to that extent ; that tenders be called for cleaning out Dake's ditch, and that tHe work be gone on with ; that the inspector be instructed to procure 200 yards of metal for Gordon road, near Sir John Firidlay's ; and that tenders ba called tor 200 yards of gravel on Huntly road, and 300 yards on road Hartley's to West Taieri. " SANITARY INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Sanitary Inspector reported tnat Messrs Samson and Son and the Dnnedin Meat Supply Company had ceased to kill cattle and sheep at their respective places. He bad condemned two sheep during the month. He had paid frequent visits to the Kaikorai and found the stream in fairly good condition. The City Abattoir was discharging a little of what might be complained of, but they were doing all in their power to prevent anything getting into tbe stream that might do it any harm. — The report was adapted.

THE MOUNT STOKER ROAD.

Cr Harrison reported that be had inspected the road and gates at Mr Junge's. and found that there were two gates across the Longford road. He recommended that Mr Junge be allowed two months in which to remove the gates. The road, although not all formed, was fit for traffic in its natural sbate. — Ifc was resolved that the recommendation in the report be given effect to.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Mr Thomas Shale wrote complaining of damage caused by the smali bird nuisance. — Consideration of the matter was dsferrsd for a month.

Messrs F. Gough and Sons wrote offering to supply rotten rock from Green Island quarry at a reasonable rate.— Ths letter was received.

A letter was received 'from the Treasury, Wellington, intimating the payment of £24 93 6d to the credit' of- the council in respect - of ajold fields' revenue from March 26 to 31.

The council's solicitors wrote, with regard to the purchase of land for a road line through Mr Robinson's property, section 44-, block 11, Maungafcua, that the cost of taking the land for.it would fall on the general-county fund. — It was resolved that the purchase of the land necessary for road deviation at Berwick be proceeded with as previously proposed, and that the purchase money be provided out of general fund ; also that Mr Robinson receive instructions to have the conveyance prepared, and that a cheque be drawn for £180 and held till the conveyance was ready and signed. Mr Henry Harraway wrote stating that be had taken steps to abate the nuisance caused by the cleaning out of the water race, Burnside. Received.

The Mayor of Dunedin wrote complaining of a nuisance on the banks of a stream which passed through the site of the Dunedin City Abattoirs — The letter was received.

Mr Sydney Goldsmith wrote calling attention to a nuisance thai; bad just been created on land occupied by Joseph Bryant, in Kaikorai Valley, owing to the carting of offal from the Dunedin City Abattoir. He abated that the offal was deposited in a pit, the drainage from which flowed into a creek cunning through his property.— Referred to the sanitary inspector to report.

Mr D. Henderson wrote applying for the issue of a slaughtering license for premises situate on sections 50 and 51, Henley estate. — The application was granted, and it was also resolved that Mr O. D. Smith bs granted a temporary license for premises at fi.iddlefr.arcb. The Town Clerk of Dunedin vri-rfe offering, on behalf of the City Council, to p*v? £15 towards the cost of metalling the road-JS-'sy into the entrance of the Dunedin Abattoirs. — It was resolved that the offer be accepted, and thai the in»pector proceed with the -work. Mr H. Welham wrote asking to have the coad from Blair Taieri throogb. Mr Kirkland'a to Longford opened up. — Received. The Secretary of the New Zealand Counties' Association wrote requesting to be furnished as soon as possible with a notice of any business the council might desire to bring bfafore the awoeiftftiom-— The Clerk stated that the

council had not subscribed to the association for gome years, and the letter was simply received.

Mr David Heenan, Jan. wrote requesting permission to cut a ditch along the bottom of his property adjoining Lee Creek for the purpose of forming a bank to prevent the water backiDg-up in time of flood. — It was resolved that the permission asked for be granted, subject to the inspector's approval. Messrs W. Blackie and fiva other ratepayers wrote asking the council to metal the road leading up to O^hiro station from Centre road. They offered to guarantee £21 towards the cost of the work — It was resolved that the inspector be instructed to procure 400 yards of metal for the road. HATES. It was resolved that the general rate for the year ending March 31, 1899, ba |i in the pound, and that the charitable aid rate be in the pound.

FINANCIAL,

Accounts amounting to £513 Is lid were parsed for payment.

The bank book, which w&b laid on the table, nhowed a debit balance of £41+3 17s 3d.

The Chairman said the council had exceeded their appropi-i^iona for the year by something like £68 Is 9d.

TENDERS.

The following tenders were acsepted :—Construction of water openings, &c, on BerwickWaipori road, Robert Gibb, £170 15s 6d ; claying Beach road, Thomas Palmer— claying 7d per yard, formation 10a per chain ; supply of 300ydo of gravel, Middlemarch, M. Stevenson, Is scl per cubic yard.
