America is massiDg her troops in Florida. Q?his step is taken to mean that Cuba will be invaded as soon as war is declared. Four hundred Spanish colonists have sailed tfrom Tampa, in Florida, for Havana. New Yobk, April 18. The Herald states that there are indications that efforts will be made to induce the House of Representatives to agree to the resolutions of the Senate, failing which result there will probably be a compromise between the two Houses on the basis of nonfcecognition of the Cuban Eepublic. • ■ Washington, April 19. ' Senor Bernabe, Spanish Minister at Washisgton, has directed the consuls in various parts of America to arrange for the departure'of Spanish residents. - Notwithstanding pressure by " President MKinley and the Speaker, the House of Rspresentativas concurred in the Senate's resolution, only omitting recognition of the Republic. The Senate, by a majority of 32, refused to concur with this amendment, and a conference lasting many hours proved resultless. The Senate then by a majority of one refused to appoint another conference. A number of youcg Republicans in the House- were in favour of recognising the Republic. There is an impression that the House will eventually yield. j : ! !
