UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The regular meeting of the University Council was held on the sth inst., and was attended by Messrs G. G. Russell (acting chairman), D. White, the Rev. A. Cameron, the Hon. W. H. Reynold?, Professor Sale, and Dr Burns.

An apology was received from Dr Hocken for inability to attend the meeting, and leave of absence was granted to the chancellor, who was leaving the colony for a time.

The Finance Committee reported having passed accounts amounting to £882 5s 9<3. There was a credit balance of £1463 at the bank. In consequence of a letter received from tbe Agent-general, authority had been cabled Home to allow a further sum of £50 for the passage money of Professor Benham and family. Mr Russell and the Rev. Mr Cameron had been appointed a -committee to visit the university and the museum and report on the repairs needed. — Approved

Mr G. G. Rassell and Dr Shand w.re appointed to represent the council on the High Schools Board of Goveraor3.

A form of declaration to be made by every undergraduate on joining the university was submitted and approved, all students at present on the books to be considered as having signed the declaration.

The Special Committee reported that satisfactory arrangements had been mado with Mr Tennaut to carry on the bobany class, and with. Blr Mawson for the practical biology class until the arrival of .Pfofeasor Benham. — Approved.

It was unanimously resolved that the council ackaowledge ths valuable services which have been rendered to the university by Mr Justice Williams, first &s vice-chancellor and afterwards as chancellor, and convey its best wishes to liim, and hope that hia visit to England may be beneficial to him, and that he n3ay s return to the colony with renewed vigour to undertake again the important duties which hr*ve co long devolved on him.
