1844. APRIL.

25th. — Afr. Frederick Tuckett, a suiveyor of the New Zealand Company, arrived at Otago whilst exploring for a suitable site for the New Edinburgh settlement. He sailed from Nelson : in the brig Deoo>ah, Captain Wing, on the 31st I Mai'ch, and was accompanied by his assistant surveyors, Alessrs. Barnici at and Davison. and by Dr. Monro. Rev. Charlet Creed, Rev. J. F. H. Wohlers. Lieut. J. J. Sjmonds, and Alessrs. Wilkinson and Withers. Air. Creed relieved Mr. Watkin at Waikouaiti, and Air. Wohlers, a Lutheran missionary, proceeded to Ruapuke. Mr. Tuckett, an officer appointed by the New Zealand C ompany, selected Otago as a site for a special settlement. Colonel Wakefield, the Now Zealand Company's agent, visited Otago, and after inspection approved of Mr. Tuckolt's selection.
