THE PUBLIC ART GALLERY.
The following ii the report of the board of trustees of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery for the year ended 28sh February last : — The board of trustees tender their grateful thartks to Mr J. T. V? right for his generous gift; of tbe picture of "Windsor Castle, from the Racecourse," by 11. C. Fox. Tins is the only new work which has been added to the gallery collection of pictures during the year. Early in the year Mrs W Cuuingham Smith resigned her seat on tbe board of trustees, owing to her leaving the colony for LondoD, aad the vacancy occasioned by her re&igimtion was filled by the appointment of Miss F. Wimpsris. "During" the year the boaid have had the great misfortune to lose by death two of their most valued members— Dr T. J. Parker and Mr W. M. Hodgldus— both of whom have rendered the most valuable service to the trust ever since its foundation. Both of these gentlemen were ex officio members of the board, and their places will be filled by their snccessois when appointed tc the positions of curaior of tho Otago Mupeum and presiskient of tha Art Society respectively. The necessity ot providing a better gallery for the pictures has been very serioutly occupying the attention of the board during the year, and it will not be long before they will be obliged to appeal to the public to aid them in putting up a building more worthy of holding their very valuable collection of pictures. The following is a statement of the receipts and expenditure ot the tnistees for the past jear. 'Jhe trustees regret that their frequent appeals to the public of Dunedin for subscriptions to pay current expenses, and to create a fund for the purchabC of pictures, are not more liberally responded to.
